Absolutely ‘a must do’ excursion is to the fortified city of Galle, which was a former Dutch East Indian Company city and significant for trade in the period of colonizing and for her splendid Dutch architecture. Houses, churches, the glorious Fort (1663), which was subsequently taken over by the British, the Dutch Reformed Church and the Dutch Museum at the famous ‘Amsterdamse Lijnbaangracht’ (New Ropewalk Street) still stand with much pride. ‘Delfts Blue’ items are still on display at the museum and impressive antique tombs of the Dutch East Indian Company sailors at the Dutch Reformed Church.
